MASABA GUPTA, PURVI DOSHI AND VJ BALHARA PRESENTED THEIR UNIQUE LOOKS FOR WINTER/FESTIVE 2010 AT LAKMÉ FASHION WEEK

MASABA GUPTA ADDED PIZZAZ TO HER INDO WEST FESTIVE LINE

The throbbing beat of a Nan khatai Indian wedding band opened day three of Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2010 as models in contemporary Indian attire demurely walked on the ramp. Then to the beat of the pulsating “Choli Ke Peeche” immortalized by mother Neena Gupta in Kalnaiyak, Masaba Gupta showed a collection which was her version of the clothes so “Festive” and had her typical interpretation.

With lots of colours and her favourite statement prints with large doses of canary yellow which appeared through the collection; the fabrics were a mix of crushed silks to net and georgette with silhouettes moving from unisex to masculine and feminine.

Tailored shirts, lots of traditional lehengas, the comfy high waisted trousers and the very classic choli appeared with body suits and sheer saris. Using a dash of bling, Masaba added on kanni and moti work in glittering gold by teaming it with red, black and white threadwork to highlight the embellishments.

The black pleated net sari with an embroidered bodysuit, the crushed long tunic. a crushed blue lehenga, flared trousers and glittering anarkali kurta with circular or appliquéd motifs were part of the utterly striking but fun collection by Masaba.

It was a range for the thinking bride stated the designer and the rather flamboyant and adventurous girl of the 21st century will definitely love the creations of Masaba Gupta who encourages women to wear the pants not only at home but even while taking the seven pheras.

PURVI DOSHI REVEALED HER INNOVATIVE CREATIVITY FOR THE COMING SEASON

One of the talented young designers of the New Age is Purvi Doshi who has blended together the rustic charm of traditional India with the beauty and glamour of fashion for her collection titled “Bheed Bhaad” which means Crowd at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2010 and was a mélange of colours, different shapes and forms. From Lucknowi chikan, to the ikat work of Andhra and the woven beauties of kota and khand from Pune; the designer created magic on the ramp.

Bringing together all these traditional aspects of India, Purvi’s creations were a happy mix of the east and west with a variety of silhouettes that gave a pleasing comfortable image and form to the garments.

Poncho blouse with woven mini, diagonal sheer stripes for sleeves, a cascade front bolero and shift, cross over striped brocade mini, tunic with chikan work, a wild mix of fabrics colours and designs and finally a hooded choli with a multi designed sari lehenga combo all married the colours of traditional India to western silhouettes with the greatest of ease. Two basic men’s shirts in woven and chikan work added to the look.

With her title as “Bheed-Bhaad” or Crowd Purvi Doshi's creations for the coming season will aptly fit into the look as they will stand out in a crowd and make the wearer a show stopper at any event.

V J BALHARA’S BOHEMIAN RURAL BRIDAL RENAISSANCE COLLECTION

Awaken all brides who want to dress in the most unconventional and dazzling creations. V J Balhara presented his “Bridal Renaissance” collection for the 21st century girl. Working with a bohemian and rural tribal theme, VJ’s collection for Winter/Festive 2010 at Lakmé Fashion Week was an opulent presentation of traditional styles from Punjab, Cooch Behar and Rajputana featuring the chogas, sherwanis, robes and drapes with elaborate Baroque embroidery.

Reviving the oldest almost forgotten hand woven Mashru silk from the Mughal era, VJ also added on brocade, pure crepe, silk organza, net, lace, silk and satin cotton in vibrant red, green, orange, purple, royal blue and black. The lush embroidery revolving around VJ’s favourite rose motif was seen in zardozi, aari work, sequins, Jaipur stones and crystal embroidery on garments and saris. The look was regal with dresses, sherwanis, saris, jackets, skirts and tunics. An innovative idea was the draping of the dupatta in a grand yet comfortable manner.

Opening the show with a striking black silk organza dress with churidars and a sleek crepe shrug with rose sleeves the collection moved to asymmetrical hem dress with shocking pink sequins, a tunic with dabka work, luxurious saris with opulent embroidery, swirling anarkali kurtas, and ended with a magnificent red Mashru silk anarkali creation with zardozi and gotta border teamed with organza choga and crepe churidars.

For bridal wear that spells grandeur then VJ Balhara’s “Bridal Renaissance” line is a must in a lady’s wardrobe.
