When top ten designers of the new generation come together on one catwalk, the result is a profusion of creativity that will set the mood for the fashion industry in the coming years. Putting together their best creations the “Terrific Ten” displayed five outfits to confirm their successful status with a unique show at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2010 called “Defining the Future of Fashion – Celebrating 5 years of Gen Next show”.
ANEETH ARORA
Her collection, the “Global Local” was aimed at fashionistas around the world. With international trends, traditional fabrics and crafts Aneeth Arora created magic on the ramp. She has shown her talents for several seasons and her label “Pero” revealed the perfect blend of local skills with international styling. For the five creations, fabrics came from five different regions – ikats from Andhra Pradesh, Maheshwari Madhya Pradesh, block prints from Rajasthan, Bandhani from Gujarat and jaamdaani from West Bengal. Shades varied from rust red, black, white, bottle green and indigo with shapes that were a clever mix of Japanese, Indian and Chinese with lots of surface texturing and prints. Here was a collection which spoke of comfort, wearability and stylish touches for the layered fusion wear.
ANUJ SHARMA
He is the man who can create style from a piece of cloth so Anuj Sharma proved with his collection called “Simplicity” that it is the creativity that counts when one talks about edgy fashion, which is not only original but affordable. With an ecru kora base there were asymmetric layered silhouettes. But it was the embellishments on the five creations that moved away from the beaten path. Triangles edged necklines, cloth bubbles outlined bodice, and giant covered buttons were ornaments for the dress, cones appeared on the bustier and tiny 3D motifs on the neck. Only Anuj Sharma could have thought of embellishments that are far away from the sequins and zari work genre.
KALLOL DATTA
Kallol Datta may believe in black humour but with a touch of stylish classic silhouettes for his creations. He called his line “Black Humourist” and showed his inspiration through quirky funky prints. For his five creations it was the long sombre silhouettes with lots of cowls in unconventional places but the prints were pure Kallol - a giant fork and spoon imprint on the back of the garments or stars on a black or white background. It was Kallol at his sartorial best for fashion that only he can dream up.
KUNAL RAWAL
Titled “Deconstruction” the Kunal Rawal fashion story was seen through the eyes of the Karigars. It was an all men’s line of T-shirts, waistcoats in canvas with funky jeans, a kurta shirt, brown cropped jacket, a sherwani and bundi combo and a sporty four flap pocket jacket and trousers set designed in brown and orange cotton.Men’s wear was aimed at the young sporty man around town who is a fashion fan and seeks the unconventional style.
NACHIKET BARVE
With a penchant for detailing Nachiket Barve had “Neo-Sophisticate” as his title and presented his typical timeless creations with mind blowing detailing techniques. Opening with a multi coloured bikini and cover, Nachiket showed his expertise with a shimmering cover over a cobweb waist coat and dress, a gold floral coat dress, a chic red chiffon gown with a tiny embroidered shrug and his famed purple/orange chiffon layered dress with an embellished robe. Beautifully crafted women’s wear that party fashionistas have longed for has to come from Nachiket Barve’s studio.
NITIN BAL CHAUHAN
Nitin Bal Chauhan has preferred to blend social causes with fashion so this time he called his line “Freedom! Freedom” and used as his inspiration the Government and the Naxalite problem. Extreme pleating with printed coated paper, white plastic basket weave for strappy dress, origami rolls for a one shoulder mini and plastic hair rollers for a dress – the materials were far from the conventional fabrics and so were the accompanying head gear, but the effect on the ramp was unbelievable which only Nitin can achieve when he plays with fashion and takes stylish “freedom” with his creativity.
RAHUL MISHRA
The creator of superb reversible garments, Rahul Mishra had “Evolution” as his theme and revealed his journey on the ramp. There is always an element of surprise in Rahul Mishra's collections so this time it was a colour story of silver, black, white, gold and ecru for Kerala textiles, khadi, organza, silk, satin and Maheshwari one of his favourite fabrics. The five creations had textiles from different regions starting with the Kerala Mundu, while the second was in the fabulous transparent Maheshwari in grey, black and white. Third was a beauty in organic khadi with a toga drape, the fourth with 3D katdana sali work and the last with gold zari hand embroidery on black. The quintet of creations was a line of beautiful formal wear aimed at women of all ages and sizes.
RIMZIM DADU
Texturing expert, Rimzim Dadu aptly called her garments “Texture Machinist” and wove together a line of dresses with amazing new surface treatments with cording, weaving, embossing and RBC. Laser cut, a specialty of Rimzim, appeared for a cage over net slip followed by a wire mesh cover, rivets as embroidery for a short shirt, silver and gold beading for a cage or a black sheath and cording for a mesh top. Unconventional and uber stylish on all fronts it was fashion that can be a conversation piece around the globe.
SAILEX NGAIRANGBAM
Known for his glamorous creations with interesting detailing Sailex Ngairangbam called his collection “Glam Rock” and presented new silhouettes, shapes and craft with renaissance fabrics as the base. Black was the basis of the five garments as a backless gown, ruffled mini and bolero, a shimmering sheath, an origami sack and a luxurious sheath with bead work came on the ramp. Here was pure cocktail glamour for the divas in India and the west that had that ultra devastating touch.
SWAPNIL SHINDE
He is the man who dresses the Bollywood divas in sexy gowns so Swapnil Shinde had “Provocative” as the title and presented garments with reworked elements from the past. Each piece was a futuristic creation that pushed Swapnil Shinde’s creativity to the limit. An asymmetric white jacket with black shredded pant, a plastic bowl for a skirt worn with a corset over black and white mini, metallic discs and plastic for tiny dress, a leather finished coat outfit and a red horizontally ripped jersey gown that will stop the traffic at any junction around the world. What a sensational impact on the catwalk!
With ten top talents on the ramp it was but natural that this fantastic show was once again a pioneering effort at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2010 and proved that great designers are born and discovered on the innovative platform of this fabulous fashion event.
