Japanese Designers come calling to Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2011


  • Lakmé Fashion Week (LFW) continues to integrate India into global fashion world by associating with Japan Fashion Week (JFW)

Mumbai, February 22, 2011: Lakme Fashion Week (LFW), India’s premier fashion event and Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Japan have inked a collaboration with their cross-cultural exchange initiative, Tokyoeye, that will see the best of Japanese fashion talent showcasing in the upcoming LFW Summer/Resort 2011. The government-aided project aims to create enterprising relationships and provides access to international collections to buyers from India and all over the world.
As per the tie up, Japan Fashion Week will be exhibiting 8 designers at LFW, out of which 3 designers will showcase their collections at a show on 11th March during Lakmé Fashion Week scheduled from March 11 to March 15 2011. Renowned brands like Somarta by designer Tamae Hirokawa; Motonari Ono by designer Motonari Ono and Araisara by designer Sara Arai will be seen on the LFW runway this season.
The collections being presented by the Japanese designers vary greatly like the label “araisara” by designer Sara Arai. Inspired by culture, scenery, natural surroundings, and spirit of the Orient in order to express the connection between traditional culture and fashion through new eyes, “araisara” delivers through fashion, our dreams to the current world and our culture to the world of tomorrow.
Designer Tamae Hirokawa of label Somarta is already famous for her ‘skin series’ which was based on the concept of 'the possibilities of apparel for a body'.

Lakmé announces talented designer duo, Gauri & Nainika as the Grand Finale Designers for Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/ Resort 2011, scheduled from March 11-15, 2011.

Mumbai, January 21, 2011: Aspiring models converged in the commercial capital today to participate in Lakmé Fashion WeekSummer / Resort 2011 Model Auditions held at the Grand Hyatt. Auditions were open to all new and aspiring models, and applicants were selected by industry experts against qualifying criteria matching international standards. This season witnessed a phenomenal response as 118 talented Indian and International female models turned up to audition which is an increase of 87% as compared to the last season. After two rounds of short listing by fashion industry experts, 7 modelsAngela Jonsson, Bryndis Helgadottir, Keylie Bodeker, Lekha Anatharaman, Rikee Chatterjee, Reha Sukheja and Sophia Dgneid were selected.

Mumbai, January 19, 2011: Acting on its mission to develop fashion creativity and promote commerce, the Advisory Board members of Lakmé Fashion Week (LFW), the leading Fashion and trade event, met to select the Gen Next, Emerging, and Accessory Show   Designers for the upcoming LFW Summer/Resort 2011.   As compared to the first Summer/Resort season held in 2010, this upcoming Summer/Resort 2011 season has generated an incredible increase in applications across the Gen Next, Emerging, and Accessory designer categories; a testament to the value, significance, and reach of the platform. LFW Summer / Resort 2011 received 155 Gen Next designer applications marking a growth of 60 % percent; ­­71 Emerging designer applications recording a hike of 11% and 22 Accessory Designer applications witnessing a 62% increase as compared to the last season of Summer/Resort in March 2010
·         This season also shows significant growth in international applications, with applications coming from 8 cities across the following countries: Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Canada, UK, France and UAE.  This represents a 300% increase over the previous Summer/Resort season.
·         Submissions came from 46 cities across the country and also London, Colombo, Karachi, Lahore, Ontario, Paris, Sharjah and Vancouver
The Lakmé Fashion Week Advisory Board comprises a panel of key stakeholders from the fashion fraternity such as educational institutions, buyers, media personalities and designers. The members present at the screening included Anamika Khanna, Designer; Dr. Darlie Koshy, Director General (Education & Training) of the Apparel Export Promotion Council; Sangita Kathiwada, Melange; Sujata Assomull Sippy, Harper’s Bazaar; Anil Chopra, CEO – Lakmé Lever; Ravi Krishnan, Managing Director-IMG South Asia and Senior Vice President-IMG; Sujal Shah, Vice President & Head of Fashion for IMG India.
To ensure that the high standards of excellence in designer participation is maintained, our esteemed board members selected 6 Gen Next, 7 Emerging Designers and 7 Accessory designers to showcase at LFW Summer/Resort 201. This season renowned stylist and designer Aki Narula is set to make a significant contribution to the future of fashion by mentoring and guiding the Gen Next applicants. The platform also welcomes veteran designer Rohit Bal as he joins the esteemed panel as an LFW Advisory Board member.
