Expect the unexpected from internationally renowned designer, Manish Arora when his creations are on the ramp. Presented by Philips, the Manish Arora show was a sensational display of extreme creativity bringing forth an inspirational mix of futuristic style with a robotic feel and Art Deco into fashion.
The show opened with an impressive laser and audio display featuring the world class products of Philips, the makers of great electronic items and as the laser lights flashed on the psychedelic ramp and backdrop, the models marched down the ramp to throbbing music.
Packed with psychedelic kaleidoscopic, abstract, op art designs and colours, Manish appearing on the Mumbai ramp after several years, unleashed a line of dresses with drapes, rouched blouses, structured jackets with colourful cowl pants, bias cut skirts and sexy plunging V necklines which were at times balanced by rigid extended shoulders and wide sleeves.
Moulded round sleeved short capes appeared occasionally and unique metallic disc blouses, horizontal colour blocking for draped bubble skirts, one shoulder cutout blouse with gleaming cigarette pants, loose swing coats, dolman sleeve textured blouses and coat dresses gave Manish’s collection that unique touch. Waist lines were flexible and moved up and down the body but favoured shape was the T silhouette with dolman sleeves for tops.
Detailing was in abundance with glittering sequins, metallic discs, 3D knitted layered appliqué flowers and fan shaped motifs.
If the clothes were stunners, the sleek solid shimmering wigs were haute show stoppers. In neon colours but styled innovatively in shapes that ranged from skull caps with side prongs to star trek helmets, or bunched up wool, beads or threads to create hairstyles of the past eras – the look was space age at times but controlled. Footwear made a stark statement with hoof like ankle bootees often giving way to platform stilettos worn with neon coloured tights. A laser pair of eye glasses nearly stopped the show with the drama they created in the dark.
The finale was the whirring sound of the helicopter with three models wearing helicopter like head gear and strutted out in black shimmering mini, a gold jumpsuit and a black trouser with glittering jacket.
Ending the first day of Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2010 on a high note, the Manish Arora show sponsored by Philips was a memorable riot of colour and style that will be the talk of the fashion season for months to come.
